How nylon braided rope is made?

Oct 03, 2020

Rope is a combination of yarns, plies, fibers or strands that are combined together into stronger and more secure form. There are mainly two types of rope: twisted rope and braided rope. Ropes usually have tensile strength and therefore can be used for dragging, lifting, climbing, and even fishing; but are too flexible to provide compressive strength. As a result, they cannot be used for pushing or similar compressive applications. Rope usually is thicker and stronger than similarly constructed cord, string, and twine.

Rope can be made from different materials from natural to artificial like nylon, polyester. But that is another story. In this article, we will show you different ways to produce nylon braided rope.

The manufacturing process of nylon braided rope inside factories

Processing the fibers and filaments

Nylon is a artificial (or synthetic) material. Therefore, in this step, several filaments are grouped together in a process called doubling or throwing. This produces a sliver of multiple plies of filaments.

Forming nylon braided rope

Obviously, nylon braided ropes are made of synthetic materials. The bobbins of yarn are all set up on couples of moving pendants on a braiding machine. Each pendant travels in an oscillating pattern, weaving the yarn into a tight braid. A set of rollers pulls the braid through a guide to lock, or set, the braid and keep tension on the rope. In some machines the braiding process is accomplished by feeding the yarns through separate counter-rotating register plates. One yarn is woven in one direction followed by another in the opposite direction, and so on, to form an interlocked braid.

If a double-braided rope is being formed, the first braid becomes the core, and the second braid is immediately woven on top of it to form the outer covering, called the coat.

As the rope emerges from the rollers, it is taken up on a reel. The finished coil is then removed and banned, and the ends are taped or melted.

Quality Control

The level of quality control depends on the intended use of the rope afterward.

Ropes for general purpose use are supplied mainly by diameter and tensile strength. Tensile strength is determined by breaking a sample piece under load. Basic raw material specification and a visual inspection are the only quality control measures used for these ropes.

Ropes intended for high-risk usages such as rescue constructions, and lifting heavy things - are more closely inspected and tested. These rope may have a code color for users to easily keep track of them.

Braided or twisted rope is better with nylon?

Nylon is a tough, lightweight and elastic artificial polymer with a protein-like chemical structure. Nylon fibers are well-known materials in rope manufacturing industry. But braided rope or twisted rope is better with nylon? The answer is both of them. Braided and twisted rope both have very different structures and strength. Which one is better is up to your intended uses.

Above is a brief process of how nylon braided rope is made inside of big rope manufacturer’s plants. In actual, rope can also be made from a mix variety of materials such as polypropylene, polyester,... Keep track of our latest articles in Asia Dragon to know more.
